Takao Shiotsuka Atelier brings japanese homes design to the next level in Residential Architecture with this unusual shape of SHIGEMI House that is located in Oita-city,Oita Japan. This 91.09 m2 japanese house design was completed in 2001-12 2002. The unusual shape of SHIGEMI house was developed for specific reasons such as protecting the house facades — which are clad in wooden boards — from the rain, create the feeling of a spacious interior without actually increasing the ground space available.
The access road slopes up toward the house, the embankment falls away on one side and rises on the other. So instead of standardized 90angles, the architects instead opted for sloped facades. the clients run a timber company and wished to fill the home, instead and out, with their company’s product.
The client original suggestion was to create wide eaves as a necessity for protecting the fine wood of the facades from the elements. Instead, the architects proposed tilting the perimeter walls outward, thus creating a unified shape that fulfilled the function of eaves, This exterior treatment has the additional advantage of broadening perspective within the home as well. The total area of the ceiling is 130m2, while that of the floor space is 100m2.
